Nicola Smythe
Field: Executive Manager, Business Risk
I was approached by a recruitment firm, who told me that a position had come up at St. James's Place. At the time I was working for the Co-operative Insurance Society in a purely compliance based role. The opportunity to expand my skill set and work in a different market area was very appealing, so I did some research into the company. I wasn’t disappointed. The ethos of the brand really got my attention. They also had the St. James's Place Foundation, which told me the company has good ethical morals and were keen on giving something back. It was clear that this was an opportunity that I couldn’t miss.
I got the job through my experience, my way with people and my adaptability to a new environment as well as difficult, and sometimes sensitive, situations. I was also willing to put in the work to progress. I’m a pretty outgoing person, I like meeting new people, and when it came to starting work, this quality came in very useful. I began to integrate myself within the team and pick up the key elements of the role. As well as a structured induction, there were a number of courses to attend, the Introduction to Wealth Management being one of them. There have been a few other courses along the way, such as Excel to enhance my IT skills and specific training courses where you learn with colleagues from around the globe. These courses were very interactive and really helped to build my confidence.
I’ve come a long way since I first joined. I’ve been promoted twice and am at the top of my grade. I also enjoy mentoring new Risk Managers and feel proud when they are promoted or recognised for their work. And I still get a buzz from working on a one to one basis with people, and seeing my work progress. Yes, I don’t think anyone could say my job was dull. In fact, every day is different and the skills I’ve learnt have been invaluable. St. James's Place encourages you to experience many areas, and, while you’re responsible for your own achievements and personal development, you feel part of a strong and supportive team. In actual fact, my team’s one of the best bits about working here: we all work well together and go out socially.
